(Review) BioGaia Drops Bring Smiles to my Baby

Hello loves.

Confinement is really boring and what’s more troublesome is handling / soothing a colicky baby. By the time you read this post, baby and I have successfully gone through the most boring but memorable confinement period (40 days for us!).
*throws confetti*

I am glad to be introduced to BioGaia supplements that helps with colic issue that my baby is currently facing. At 22 days young, I double checked with my baby’s paediatrician and she quickly says yes to the drops that help soothe colic baby. She assured me it’s perfectly safe as it’s a supplement and NOT medication so I am 100% at peace when giving my baby this to soothe his colic issue.

About BioGaia Probiotics:
BioGaia is an innovative Swedish healthcare company and a world leader in probiotics with more than 25 years of experience in the field of probiotic lactic acid bacteria. Their probiotic strain Lactobacillus reuteri is a natural probiotic supplement that is safe and suitable for long term use. The health effects are documented in more than 130 completed clinical studies conducted on more than 12,300 individuals including infants, children and adults.

What’s Colic?
To me colic and gassy means the same. (Yes, it’s the same my pediatrician says.) The clinical term refers to a condition of inconsolable crying, fussing and irritability in an otherwise healthy baby during the first three months of life. Colic usually appears in the evening, but can present at other times as well.
FYI: up to 1 outta 5 babies are diagnosed with infantile colic!!!

Causes of Colic?
No one really knows for sure. It may be of psychological, social & biological. Eg food allergy and disturbed gut motility are possible causes.
FYI: Colicky infants have been seen to have a lower number of a certain type of healthy bacteria (lactobacilli) in their system, compared to healthy infants.

Colics Untreated can lead to?
FGIDs (functional gastro intestinal disorders) especially in the first 12 months of infant life.
Neurological disorder (eg migraine), psychological disorder, developmental delay.
Inadequate gut hormone secretion.
Gut micro flora imbalance.
Aerophagia (excessive air swallowing)
CMP allergy (eg cow milk allergy)
GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)

BioGaia Probiotic Drops puts smiles inside your baby - how?
Powerful strain of Lactobacillus reuteri is proven to maintain gut motility (L. reuteri improves barrier function of the gut by tightening the intestinal lining and increasing cell growth), health and function in infants. Thus creating an optimal condition for a happy tummy and a good gut feeling. It does not affect breastfeeding or the taste of food. It’s completely safe for both infants and children (0-3 years old). The only probiotic with scientific evidence in infantile colic. Prescribed in 100 countries worldwide by child specialists!
FYI: BioGaia L. reuteri is special — it’s derived from human mother’s milk & survive in stomach.

L. reuteri is indicated for:
Infantile colic
Regurgitation
Constipation
Acute gastroenteritis
Infection protection
Reduce allergies and eczema
Help tolerance for infant formula
Antibiotic - associated side effects

Let’s jump right into how-to and what I think it did for my little baby.

How-to?
BioGaia Probiotic Drops
Shake well for 10 seconds before each use to mix the bacteria culture with the oil. Tilt 45 degrees and a drop will come out. Dispense right to mouth or spoon.
1 dose (of 5 drops) a day for baby 0 months onward.

Thoughts?
Packaging - it's a glass bottle that is similar to essential oil bottles but is actually a clinical bottle with clear instructions and ingredients too. Convenient to bring around & dispense easily.
Texture & Scent/Taste - It’s liquid-y. No scent to my nose when smelling directly from bottle. Taste, unsure coz my baby is the one tasting it XD
Thoughts - My baby is currently 1 month 3 days young. I always had it out of the fridge a while before letting him consume and my doctor recommends to consume around the same time daily for maximum effectiveness. Ever since his third day of consumption I realize he farts and poop more often. His cry is also much lesser which is a good sign! I will definitely repurchase as it does do what it claims and helping my colicky baby happier.

Also, they have another product, which is the…

BioGaia Probiotic Chewable
If you’re currently pregnant, lactating or just wanna take it as a supplement for your children (4-18 years old), check out the BioGaia Probiotic Chewable.
FYI: Mom’s Choice Award Gold Recipient Winner.

I am currently breastfeeding my little one and also consuming this BioGaia Probiotic Chewable Tablets for 2 weeks now.

Claims:
Promote healthy microflora - prevent / relieve common pregnancy problems like constipation.
Increase overall immunity for infections and may even help boost the immune system for your unborn baby.
Reduce antibiotic-associated side-effects.
Promote the microbiota after C-section.

How-to?
Consume one tablet per day. Either chew or let it melt in your mouth.

Thoughts?
Packaging - Each tablet is individually sealed and comes in a strip of ten tablets. A box contains 30 tablets. I like how it is convenient even for the busiest adult or younger kids to maintain healthy gut & improve overall immune system :)
Texture & Scent - It is of a white smooth, round tablet with specks of yellow. There is no scent.
Thoughts - It tastes mildly of lemon & doesn’t leave weird aftertaste which is awesome! I am surprised that it melts quite fast too so won’t be too worrying if my nephew eats it coz he for sure will enjoy it like his usual candies. I personally feel that it helps ease my constipation issue & I know the good bacteria (L. reuteri) can be passed to my little one via my constant breastfeeding.

Hope this post is helpful for you and your little ones as it did for us! ;)

I only hoped that I’d known this supplements sooner when I am pregnant because their studies show an increase of anti-inflammatory factors in milk & enhance babies’ immunity when mothers consume BEFORE lactation, thus baby would have fewer chances to have food allergic reactions as well as overall improved immunity.
